However, al most $500,000 needs to be pledged if we are to reach our goal of $1.5 million. Rich Os borne, Campaign vice chairman explained that if all those who still haven’t made their pledge each gives more than last year, the Federation will be in good position to fund the organiza tions, programs and services that seek assistance from funds raised each year. The success of an annual Federation campaign depends on the participation of the entire community. While there are some who can and do make rather large gifts, each $ 18 or $36 is crucial. It is the ideal that everyone has an opportunity to sit down face to face to discuss their gift. The chance to discuss with a friend or colleague the issues facing us as a community and how we are responding is David Swimmer, cochair of the S3,000 event, with Deborah Reimer, Israel Television’s first English News Anchor, who was the guest speaker. Other cochairs of the event were Kristin Swimmer and Maxine and Gary Silverstein. How ever, because of a limited num ber of solicitors, many of us receive a phone call on Super Sunday. It is a truly inspiring event when so many people spend a Sunday afternoon help ing all of being assured of Jewish continuity. As the campaign winds down. Federation President Shelton Gorelick has asked that if you have not yet made your pledge, or if for some reason you have not been contacted, call the Federation office at 366-5007. Campaign Leadership Committed to Operation Exodus As of January 31, Operation Exodus has raised more than $789.8 million from North American Jewry. These funds are to help the continuing flow of Jews from the former Soviet Union to Israel. So far this year, 6,160 Jews have immigrated to Israel, including 5,409 from the former Soviet Union. In 1992, a total of 77,032 Jews immigrat ed to Israel and since 1986 over 420,000 have arrived. While the Federation’s Cam paign leadership recognizes the needs at home and the impor tance of the annual campaign, they have reiterated their com mitment to raise our fair share for Operation Exodus. Both Don Bemstein and Rich Os borne reminded the community that this is a three year commit ment and any pledge made today does not need to be paid imme diately. However the flow to Israel continues as the situation in the former Soviet Union deteriorates especially in the Moslem Republics. Several special events and speakers are being considered to help make the Charlotte com munity more aware of the need for Operation Exodus dollars. It is anticipated that this Continu ing Operation Exodus will con tinue until every person in our community has the^opportunity to give.
